“What’s on America’s Mind” Tonight at 7:00 PM Pacific

Tonight we’ll discuss the Hammett Road Interchange and its relationship with the North County Corridor,  and the Salida Annexation. We’ll be discussing the six questions we asked the Board of Supervisors yesterday, and the questions we asked the Modesto City Council less than a few short hours ago. On the national scene we’ll discuss the fake Wheaton College outrage and Mitt Romney allegations, the Continuing War on Women, and the dangers of fracking.  All of these topics and more at 7:00 PM Pacific Time.

The call in number is 1-347-215-9414

A question for everyone: Do you want to be able to set your drinking water on fire as it comes out of the tap?

It’s Still A Man’s World….Will It Ever Change?

By Gaetana Drake

President Obama will be speaking in Denver on August 8th.  Georgetown University Law School graduate Sandra Fluke will be introducing him.

You may remember Sandra Fluke from Rush Limbaugh’s characterization of her as a “slut and prostitute” and his desire for her to film her sexual encounters for him to watch.  All of this started when Ms. Fluke was denied the opportunity to speak before a congressional panel discussing birth control.  Remember, this was a five-person panel composed of only men (who refused to hear any testimony from women).  Ms. Fluke was able to speak at other forums and advocated for insurance coverage for birth control.  Keep in mind that most insurance plans voluntarily cover the little blue magic pill for men (Viagra), but until 8/1/12, when portions of President Obama’s Affordable Care Act went into effect, chose not to cover birth control.

Apparently, Mr. Limbaugh isn’t the only male who believes that sexually active women are sluts.  There have been many comments made on-line concerning Ms. Fluke’s appearance in Denver.  The vast majority of them refer to her in sexually explicit terms.  Terms you wouldn’t want someone to use when discussing your mother, sister or daughter.  I am always appalled at how many people believe a sexually active adult female is something to be denigrated.

It’s unfortunate that we don’t have comparable terms for men who are sexually active.  Instead, they get bragging rights for their conquests.  They get “high fives” and slaps on the back from their buddies.  They are considered normal, healthy men.  At the very worst, they are called a “player”.  That term hardly has a negative tone.  And all the while, the very women they are having sex with are called “whores and sluts”.

It’s unbelievable that in the year 2012, we are still having to fight for our right to use birth control.  It’s also unbelievable that we still consider sexually active adult women to be sluts.  Haven’t we evolved more than that?  Will women ever achieve true equality to men?

Hammett Road Interchange and the North County Corridor – Could there be a Connection?

Decisions Facing Salida and  Modesto Citizens

We’re facing another one of those self full-filling prophesies.  We have the 2007 Salida Now proposition where the Board of Supervisors rushed,  in order to thwart the will of the people and voted for Salida Now.  By doing this, they were “casting in stone for 25 years”  for developers to build 4,000 homes and designating large amounts of land for mixed residential (homes and businesses and other land use designations)  before the public could vote to could stop the project.

Now they’re saying because of the Salida Now, we need to push forward and embrace the Hammett Road interchange.  But the result of building the exchange, in the eyes of many, will be to set aside the idea of using Kiernan as the Highway 99 connecting leg and allow the developers, who are always looking 20 years ahead, to pave over even more prime farm land between Kiernan and Stanislaus River and McHenry Avenue, thereby creating even more opportunity for them to plant driveways, not crops and to build homes and rake in high short-term profits, while abandoning Stanislaus County residents  to yet more massive subdivisions as soon as the economy turns around.

Do We Have Options?

At last Tuesday night’s town meeting the public had the opportunity to hear the County/Cal Trans proposals regarding the interchange.  Questions arose from the public that it would take an attorney well versed in County law to answer.  Unfortunately none were present. Here are some of the questions the public asked that night.

1. Is it possible for Salida to have a referendum and vote to refute the County Boards’ Salida Now land use vote from 2007?

2. Are Salida citizens guaranteed by law a vote in any annexation attempt by Modesto?

3. How much is left in the account the County says developers contributed to in order to push the Hammett Road Interchange?

4. Exactly how many years are remaining from the Salida Now vote regarding land use designations?

5. Exactly how many years will remain on Salida Now land use rules if Modesto annexes them?

6. Will Modesto citizens get to vote on annexing Salida?

7. For the sake of openness, exactly which companies and their owners,  were the land use guarantees made to?

These questions will be asked of the Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors at the August 7th 2012 meeting.

A Salida Resident Read the Following Suggestions at the Meeting Tuesday Night

7-31-2012:  Notes on the road service for Salida area projects:

No more prime corners used for storm drain ponds with fences for spray paint taggers!  Salida already has one at Sisk and Highway 219.

Feeder roads and traffic light intersections must be set back 3000 feet from the freeway, the current mess of Sisk Road next to the freeway slowing traffic on the freeway down to a stop is very poor planning.  What we have now is Service Level F for traffic flow.

Freeway exits and entrances should be full clover leaf designs, you should not have to slow down or stop to cross over the oncoming lanes of traffic to get on or off the freeway.

Any uses of electricity should be offset by solar panels that feed the grid during the day, banking the power that will be needed at night, for traffic control lights, street lights, storm water pumps and landscaping needs.  The real costs of the projects should not be ‘externalized’ or passed on to the public tax rolls at large, but paid for by the project developers and home construction companies, etc….in the Salida road projects many of the costs should be passed onto the developers of the Riverbank Crossroads project, it seems all of Riverbank uses Salida as it’s on/off ramp to Highway 99, in fact due to the Stanislaus River, Salida acts as the bridge off what is basically an island in northwest Stanislaus County.

Currently we have an unsafe pedestrian environment for children to walk or bike to the new Salida High School.  Sidewalks, bike lanes and CROSS WALKS or pedestrian bridges must be built to keep our children safe and plan for a walkable community.

Developments such as Costco’s store, a half mile off the street with no safe walkway to the building and a car entrance too darn close to the freeway that impacts freeway traffic, are not to be repeated!

Long term Salida goals require a retail sales tax base.  Careful zoning and roadway planning are required to realize this outcome.  The first step would be to bring a local bank back to the Salida area!

The environmental impact from heavy traffic due to cars and trucks will be a major problem for the Salida area.  PM1 and PM10, soot, ozone, smog, road noise, car stereo abuse, oversized exhaust systems and polluted storm drain run off, litter and 1000 wads of discarded chewing gum on the street all degrade our lives in so many ways and impact children even more so.

Sound walls, raised earth berms, quiet road surfaces and properly sized (narrowly painted) lanes can help to regulate speed and in a small way offset the projects very negative impact on Salida.

All of this area is prime farm land served by an excellent 100 year old canal water system.  All efforts should be made to complete the Kiernan Avenue/Claribel Highway system to the City of Oakdale before any new farm land is consumed for developer profit!

Everyone should attend these meeting because you have a chance to have your voice heard.  Will it make a difference?  Only time will tell.  Hopefully the County Board will allow the County Attorney to answer these and other questions which  might arise.

Is George Petrulakis a Paid Lobbyist / Lawyer for MID Here’s His Contract

By Emerson Drake

We expressed concerns regarding any meetings between the City of Modesto and MID without Rollie Stevens being present especially when it was made known MID refused to allow Stevens to attend any meetings between them and Modesto City fathers.  When Modesto Mayor Garrad Marsh met with MID General Manager Allen Short with Attorney/Lobbyist George Petrulakis present we felt uncomfortable.  We were assured by the Mayor Petrulakis was just there as a facilitator. At the time, no one could prove Petrulakis was there for any other reason.  But now after you read the contract you’ll see he is being paid to influence Modesto’s elected officials to see things MID’s way.

You’ll be able to see how much Petrulakis is being paid by the hour and how much he’s received so far.

We’ll discuss MID’s choke hold on requested public information very soon, but for now read the contract and decide for yourself if this is the correct way to proceed.  If MID gets to have a paid attorney/lobbyist in the meetings shouldn’ t we?

August 1, 2012 – A Day That Will Live In Infamy?

By Gaetana Drake

Representative Mike Kelly (R-Fl), stated “I know in your mind you can think of two times America was attacked.  The first was December 7, 1941 – Pearl Harbor Day.  The second was 9/11, the day we were attacked by terrorists.  I want you to remember August 1, 2012, the attack on our religious freedom – that is a ‘day that will live in infamy’ along with the other dates”.  Representative Kelly believes America has been attacked because of the following:

Several aspects of President Obama’s Affordable Care Act went into effect on August 1, 2012.  They include:

Pap smears, mammograms, STD screenings, well-woman check-ups, HPV testing, HIV screening, gestational diabetes screening, breast-feeding supplies and assistance, domestic violence screenings and counseling, and the now infamous birth control coverage, being provided to women with insurance with no co-pay and no deductible.  This does not mean the services are free – the women are still paying for their insurance coverage.  The only change is that there will be no co-pay or deductible for these preventive services.  Private insurances are now required to include birth control coverage if they didn’t already.

On July 31, 2012, the eve of these great changes (which will benefit millions of American women) taking effect, the Republicans voted for the 34th time to repeal the Affordable Care Act.  Believe me, there is a war on women, as they have shown for the 34th time.

Representative Kelly believes that providing American women access to affordable birth control is an attack on America.  There is already an exemption in the Affordable Care Act for employers whose primary purpose is the promotion of their religious beliefs, such as churches, synagogues, temples, mosques and so on.  Apparently requiring other non-religious employers to cover birth control is an attack on their religious freedom.  No one will EVER force a woman to use birth control if she doesn’t want to.  No one will EVER force a woman to have an abortion if she doesn’t want to.  But it is wrong to allow non-religious organizations to suddenly claim they have a moral or religious objection to this very basic, very important part of a woman’s health care.  At this point, their religious freedom is impacting the personal freedom of American women to have access to health care.

Opponents to the Affordable Care Act have said that insurance premiums will go up.  One year ago, another part of the ACA took effect, which says that if your insurance company spends less than 80 – 85% of your premiums on your health care, you must be refunded the difference!  Now, a year after this provision took effect, refund checks are being mailed to businesses and individuals.  Checks that will total $1.1 billion dollars!  That’s $1.1 billion that will go back into our economy as people getting refunds use the money to buy a car, to help pay for their child’s education, to help make their mortgage payment, or even just to buy groceries.  This is money that goes back to the people and businesses who paid for the insurance, instead of going to a $50 million dollar bonus for the CEO of an insurance company.

Now, back to the comment about “a day that will live in infamy”.  Does Representative Kelly understand how insulting comparing birth control coverage to Pearl Harbor or 9/11 is?  Does he realize he just insulted every service man and woman, past, present and future, who have died and those who continue to risk their lives for us?  My father served in the Navy during WWII, one of my uncles stormed the beach at Normandy, and my great-great-grandfather fought at the Battle of Gettysburg.  Mr. Kelly has just insulted each of them.  Shame on you, Mr. Kelly.  You are no American.

A last thought about birth control – my grandson made an observation yesterday when we were discussing this.  He wondered, “why do men even get to vote on this?”   A good point…why are men getting to control the reproductive lives of all American women?

MID Violates Brown Act and Public Records Act in the Same Week

By Emerson Drake

During the Modesto Irrigation District Board Meeting on July 24,2012,  Board President Tom Van Groningen refused to allow the public to speak in response to several agendized items.  This is a direct violation and should not be allowed but this Board President likes making up rules as he goes along.

Just a point of reference, but Bee reporter John Holland was sitting just a few rows away from me, but somehow neglected to report this Brown Act Violation in his story about the meeting.

The Public Records Act limits the time a public agency has to respond to inquiries and since no emergency delay has been requested, by the time MID responds they will be in violation.  MID has delayed many Public Records Act requests, and this is just another example.

Saving Money and a River

English: Dana Fork of the Tuolumne River, Yose...

By Peter Drekmeier

Do you know where your water comes from? If you’re reading this, chances are most of it originates in the “wild and scenic” Tuolumne River in Yosemite National Park. That’s where the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir stores snowmelt from the High Sierra for use throughout much of the Bay Area. San Mateo County receives about 85 percent of its water from the Tuolumne.

Paying $1.5 million per year for water we no longer need makes no sense and would further outrage ratepayers. Fortunately, there’s still time for our elected representatives to choose a different path. Do you know where your city councilmembers stand on this issue? Are they even aware it’s being considered?

Please contact your elected representatives and encourage them to stand up for you as a ratepayer. You can express your concerns to the SFPUC by visiting http://tinyurl.com/StopTheTransfer

Is Michele Bachmann a “Dangerous American?”

By Gaetana Drake

Political commentator Joan Walsh has said “Michele Bachmann is Joe McCarthy in lipstick, and he was a dangerous American.”

As you all know by now, Michele Bachmann has requested an investigation into Huma Abedin, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s Deputy Chief of Staff.  Because Ms. Abedin is a practicing Muslim, Ms. Bachmann seems to believe she is trying to destroy America from within.  Ms. Bachmann suggests that Huma’s late father, her mother and her brother are connected to Muslim Brotherhood operatives and/or organizations.

Ms. Abedin was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan.  As a toddler her parents took her to Saudi Arabia to live.  Her father and her mother both received a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, and Huma graduated from George Washington University.  Her father founded an institute to promote religious understanding between East and West.

In 2010 Ms. Abedin was listed in Time’s “40 Under 40”, a list of a “new generation of civic leaders” and “rising stars of American politics.”

Politicians of both parties have come to the defense of Ms. Abedin.  John McCain stated “these allegations about Huma and the report from which they are drawn are nothing less than an unwarranted and unfounded attack on an honorable woman, a dedicated American and a loyal public servant.  The letter and the report offer not one instance of an action, a decision or a public position that Huma has taken while at the State Department that would lend credence to the charge that she is promoting anti-American activities within our government.  These attacks on Huma have no logic, no basis and no merit.  And they need to stop now.”   He also said, “Put simply, Huma represents what is best about America: the daughter of immigrants, who has risen to the highest levels of our government on the basis of her substantial personal merit and her abiding commitment to the American ideals that she embodies so fully.  I am proud to know Huma and to call her my friend.”  Speaker of the House John Boehner said, “I don’t know Huma, but from everything that I do know of her, she has a sterling character and I think accusations like this being thrown around are pretty dangerous.”

This isn’t the first time Michele Bachmann has attacked a female politician.  Every first lady supports a “cause”.  Michelle Obama’s cause is childhood obesity.  She has promoted healthy eating and exercise.  She has campaigned to get more mothers to breast-feed their infants, since studies show that children who are breast-fed for the first four to six months have less chance of becoming obese than those who were fed formula.  She has also tried to break down barriers to nursing in the workplace.  Michele Bachmann (who, by the way breast-fed all five of her children), said “to think that government has to go out and buy my breast pump for my babies?  You want to talk about the nanny state, I think you just got a new definition.”  She also suggested that Michelle Obama may one day run for office and her breast-feeding and healthy eating campaign was just a preview of the nanny state that she would try to push through if elected.

I’m not sure why Ms. Bachmann believes that promoting healthy eating, exercise and breast-feeding equates to a nanny state.  Is there a government employee in your home watching what you eat?  Monitoring how often you exercise?  Making sure you breast-feed your baby?  Laura Bush chose the cause of literacy while she was first lady.  She went to schools and read to children.  She encouraged parents to read to their children on a daily basis.  Was that a “nanny state”?  A more literate and healthier population can only be good for all of us.

Ms. Bachmann once said that Nancy Pelosi was “sticking the taxpayer” with her $100,000 bar tab for alcohol on the military jets that she had been flying on.  Politifact took a close look at this and rated Bachmann’s interpretation of Pelosi’s expenses as “pants on fire”.  We all know what that means – liar, liar, liar!

Someone once told me, “Not all Muslims are terrorists, but all terrorists are Muslims.”  I mentioned that Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols (the Oklahoma City bombers) were white Americans and not Muslims (the person I was talking to got a little flustered over that!)

So to answer my question at the beginning , is Michele Bachmann a dangerous American?  I believe she is.  She would have us believe that anyone of a different religion or different culture is anti-American and a threat to us all.  She forgets that we are all descendants of immigrants.  She forgets that America is the great melting pot and it’s our diversity that makes us so unique.  It’s people like Michele Bachmann who are out to destroy America.
