Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” Law

A Florida woman is facing 20 years in prison for standing her ground.  Marissa Alexander is a 31 year old mother of three.   Her husband, Rico Gray, had been arrested twice for domestic battery.  One of the violent attacks sent Alexander to the hospital.  After that, Alexander obtained a protective order against Gray.  That order was still in effect on August 1, 2010, when Gray flew into a violent rage.  What caused such rage?  Alexander had sent a picture of her newborn daughter to her first husband.

Gray has told prosecutors that he has five baby mamas and he has abused them all.  He said “they had to walk on eggshells around me”.  He said he “punched women in the face, shoved them and choked them.”

Alexander was in her bathroom when Gray went into his jealous rage and tried to force his way in.  He is seven inches taller and 100 pounds heavier than Alexander.

When she managed to get by him, she panicked and ran into the garage, forgetting her car keys.  She couldn’t escape from the garage because the door wasn’t working.  So she grabbed her gun from her car and headed back into the kitchen, where Gray confronted her again.

Gray admitted he was “going towards her” when she fired one shot that was high and to his right.  At that point, he left with his two sons.

Gray admits that if his sons hadn’t been in the house, he probably would have taken the gun from her and “put my hands on her.”

The judge in the case has ruled that the “stand your ground” law doesn’t apply because Alexander could have escaped through the front or back door instead of going to the garage.

I don’t imagine that judge has ever been in a situation where she feared for her life, at the hands of a man who had previously beaten her to the point of being hospitalized.  It’s easy in those moments, to panic.  She blindly got away from him, without the forethought to go through the front or back door.  Or maybe she had forethought to get to the car and get her gun.  In that case, she was simply “standing her ground.”

Interesting that George Zimmerman wasn’t arrested the night he killed Trayvon Martin, but Marissa Alexander was arrested, charged and faces 20 years in prison for defending herself.  In a case where no one was hurt.  Apparently “stand your ground” doesn’t apply to black women in Florida.

Is President Obama A Communist?

By EOM Staff

If you’ve been watching the news the last couple of days, you might be surprised to find out that our president is a communist/socialist/marxist.  This is because he is using the word “Forward” as his new campaign slogan.  You might wonder why this word makes him a communist.  It’s because (according to the far-right pundits) Chairman Mao once used the slogan “A Great Leap Forward.”  Apparently, that means any future use of the word forward indicates communism.

I wonder how the fine citizens of Wisconsin feel about being communists.  Their state motto is “Forward”.  It’s printed on their state quarter.  It’s on their state flag.  It’s been there since 1848 when they joined the Union.  Those poor people!  They didn’t realize they were communists!

Then there’s Richard Nixon.  You remember him, right?  Tricky Dick, Watergate…a fine example of a Republican.  When he was running for president in 1968, his campaign slogan was “Forward Together”.   We all failed to understand that we actually elected a communist president in 1968!

The right-wing pundits are saying that use of the word forward is a “secret signal” of President Obama’s intention to turn America into a communist country.

May I suggest that we all think for ourselves and don’t drink the kool-aid the far right is pouring?

Missouri’s “Don’t Say Gay” Bill

HB 2051, introduced by Representative Steve Cookson (R), would “prohibit the discussion of sexual orientation in public school instruction, material, or extracurricular activity, except in scientific instruction on human reproduction.”

This bill would have the immediate effect of banning the more than 80 Gay/Straight Alliances (GSA Clubs) that meet in Missouri high schools to help teen-agers who are struggling with their sexual identity.

Dwight Scharnhorst, (R), co-sponsored the bill and told the national Huffington Post news website that teaching about LGBT issues in public schools would lead to other discussions and “there is no need to talk about Billy wanting to marry a goat.”  I wonder why Republicans always compare gay marriage to wanting to marry a farm animal?  Closed minds, I suppose.

In defense of his bill, Representative Cookson said that schools are struggling financially and should focus on math, science and reading.  True, but the 80 GSA Alliance Clubs meet after school, and do not take away from classroom time.

We hear on the news every week about another child who commits suicide because of bullying at school.  This bill would prevent such a troubled child from talking to his teacher, his school counselor or his principal about being bullied because he is gay.

Some school districts in Missouri changed their anti-harassment policies to include sexual orientation.  Now the legislature will tell them they can no longer comply with their own policies that attempt to reduce bullying in schools.

Imagine the teen in Missouri who is gay and being bullied every day.  Some of these teens can’t talk to their families about this.  If this bill passes they won’t be able to talk to a teacher, counselor or principal who may be able to help them.  This can only result in more suicides.

If you can reduce bullying, students who are no longer being bullied will perform better.  Schools will perform better.  How can you achieve increased performance  if you continue to allow harassment and bullying of students who are gay?

Someday our grandchildren will study in their history classes, the treatment of women, minorities and gays in our society, and particularly in this election year.  I think they may be ashamed of us.

Aren’t We All Just People?

Much has been said in the past year about the possibility of legalizing same-sex marriage.  Several states have already done so, and several more are considering it.  Many people who are opposed to this believe that allowing people of the same sex to marry will destroy the sanctity of marriage or make a mockery of it.  I don’t believe that’s true.  I believe the only people who can destroy a marriage are the people in the marriage.  If you really want to use the argument of not allowing someone to marry in order to protect the institution of marriage, consider the following:

Larry King – 8 divorces

Jesse James and Tiger Woods – each had sex with multiple partners while married

Kelsey Grammer – ended his 15 year marriage over the phone

Phil Collins – ended his marriage by sending his wife a text message

Kim Kardashian – spent $10 million on her wedding, only to file for divorce 72 days later

Britney Spears – married a childhood friend…for 55 hours

Newt Gingrich – cheated on first and second wives while they were seriously ill.  Used the daughters of the first wife to tell the world that his second wife was lying about his third wife

Anthony Weiner – texted nude pics of himself to his followers (granted, he only meant to send it to one woman) while still a newlywed

Herman Cain – accused of sexual harassment and had a long-term affair that ended just prior to running  for the GOP nomination

Mark Stouder – Republican from Indiana who extolls family values made a video in which he praised the virtues of sexual abstinence.  But the video was made with a female staffer with whom he was having an affair

This list goes on and on…

These are the kinds of people who make a mockery of marriage.  How about we ban them from marrying and allow same-sex couples who are committed to each other to tie the knot?

After all, we’re all just people….
